中国内地流行乐代表人物，传奇性天才巨星；20世纪80年代流行文化符号性标志。她的歌声风靡大街小巷，被誉为“迪斯科女皇”、“无敌电嗓”。以性感、率真、阳光的演唱方法与演唱风格，开创了流行乐艺术的新范式。张蔷16岁出道，长期遭受中国主流体制与媒体莫名的全面封杀，但被美国《时代》周刊评为“全球最受欢迎的女歌手”，是具有国际影响力的歌星，是两千余万张专辑销售记录的保持者。

张蔷1967年生于北京，出身于音乐家庭。5岁起在妈妈指导下练习小提琴、钢琴。张蔷是中国内地流行乐坛代表人物，上世纪80年代的“迪斯科女皇”，风靡大街小巷的传奇性天才巨星，赋予了时代符号性标志。张蔷也是具有国际影响力的歌星，被美国《时代》周刊评为“全球最受欢迎的女歌手”。张蔷音色与演唱风格均独树一帜，首开先河。艺途与“晚会路线”歌手大相径庭，张蔷当时遭到中国主流体制与媒体莫名的全面封杀，她像岩石上的小花，独自顽强绽放。
少年出道
还是在中国大陆刚刚开始改革开放的八十年代，年龄尚小的张蔷，本来正师从在交响乐团工作的母亲那里学习小提琴，但当时的她，似乎对流行音乐更有兴趣。于是才16岁，张蔷就开始出道改唱流行歌曲。
张蔷扎实的基本功以及对音乐的敏感，奠定了她日后歌唱事业的顺利发展。八十年代中期的中国流行音乐处于启蒙阶段，张蔷与所有中国歌手一样，以翻唱欧美、日本、港台流行歌曲为主，1985年，年仅18岁的张蔷发表首张个人专辑《东京之夜》，便畅销百万风靡全国，迅速走红。在短短两年时间内，张蔷发行30张个人专辑，累计销量高达2000余万。被著名乐评人金兆钧誉为：中国流行音乐84、85代表人物。
横遭封杀
1985至1987年，张蔷在中国歌坛的影响可谓深远。但除了发行唱片外，张蔷的身影没有出现在广播、电视、报纸等媒体，与中国歌手的晚会路线大相径庭。主流媒体的冷落并未影响中国流行音乐的发展，这并不意味着张蔷的演唱有局限，相反却奠定了她唱片歌手的地位，张蔷的唱片拥有大量拥趸者，除了曾经的“铁杆歌迷”以外，还有二十几岁的新一代年轻人。听了她的歌，便知道她绝对是有这个自信的。
张蔷说：“20多年来，我录制了30张专辑，而且嗓音几乎和好多年前没什么变化，这方面我非常自信，但舞台经验确实少得可怜。当初不知道什么缘故，不知惹恼了谁，乐坛几乎全面将我封杀，什么演唱会呀、电视台呀，根本不可能上。除了录音棚为喜欢我的歌迷录制专辑外，我很难出现在公众面前，甚至很多我的歌迷到现在都只是通过磁带封面认识我，还不知道生活中的我到底长啥样。”
正是这种打压，这位至今排名中国唱片销量榜首的歌星，在几年后退出歌坛，远走澳大利亚。当她再次出现在歌迷面前时，已是两个孩子的妈妈。也难怪有歌迷表示：“等了20年啊，张蔷复出开演唱会，算是还了我们歌迷和她本人一个公道。”张蔷说：“我能站上舞台为歌迷歌唱已是很不容易，我想，不如用说话的时间来多唱些歌，报答热爱我的观众，毕竟他们已默默支持、等待了我20多年……”张蔷对她的歌迷感到有些歉疚。
就在2008年1月中旬，中央电视台《见证》栏目播出了《风起张蔷》专题，称她的专辑销量远远高于邓丽君——国家级电视台第一次肯定了她在中国流行乐举足轻重的地位。
艺术之旅
音乐游走
1987年，张蔷在事业最辉煌时期赴澳洲留学，后结婚定居香港。1988至1992年，张蔷以每年一张专辑的速度保持着与音乐近距离的接触。
1996年，张蔷离异后返回北京，出版了首张摇滚风格的专辑，次年推出《习惯寂寞》。两张专辑收录张蔷个人创作的10首作品，这标志着张蔷开始了创作歌手的行列。张蔷擅于写情歌，灵感来了，20分钟就能出一首歌。
主要活动
1986年，张蔷参加了郭峰等人在首都体育场举办的《让世界充满爱》“全国百名歌手演
唱会”。
2000年，张蔷被列为“不可或缺的人物”参加CCTV第一期《同一首歌》节目。一曲《爱你在心口难开》唤醒了无数歌迷尘封的记忆。
2001年，张蔷发表了复出的第一张作品集《尽情飞扬》，在第一时间内，主打曲目《尽情飞扬》《秋天的玫瑰》便出现在全国各大排行榜首位。这标志着张蔷再度冲击歌坛的序曲已经拉开。
2002年12月，张蔷《冬天的咖啡》专辑发行。
2004年，《张蔷1985-2004》第三十张纪念专辑出版。叱咤歌坛二十周年张蔷个人演唱会唱响北京。
