Grandpa Geppetto carved
a puppet out of wood.
The wooden puppet
blinked his eyes
and waved his arms and legs.
“Oh, boy! You are alive!”
Geppetto named the wooden puppet
‘Pinocchio’.
“Pinocchio, Pinocchio!
I am Pinocchio!”
Geppetto made Pinocchio his son.
He was poor,
but he wanted to send Pinocchio
to school.
Geppetto sold his old coat
and bought books for Pinocchio.
He cut off the colored paper
to make clothes for Pinocchio.
“You look great.
Are you ready for school?
Have a good day at school,
Pinocchio.”
“Thank you. You are the best, Dad!
I promise you.
I will make you proud and glad.
I will study hard for you.”
Pinnochio couldn’t wait to
go to school.
“I’ll study hard for my dad!”
Just then,
Pinocchio saw people gathered
in front of a colorful tent.
“Everyone, come and see
the marionettes and clowns.
Welcome to the best puppet show in town!”
“Wow, it looks fun!
I’ll go to school... tomorrow!”
Pinocchio sold his books
and bought a ticket
for the puppet show.
The puppets on the stage
saw Pinocchio
sitting in the audience and said,
“Why are you there, wooden puppet?
Come and join us!”
Pinocchio went up to the stage
and played around.
The owner of the theater
got very angry.
“How dare you ruin my show!
I’ll throw you in the fire!”
“Dad, please help me!
I’m sorry. I broke a promise.
I wasn’t being honest.”
The owner of the theater
felt sorry for Pinocchio,
so he let him go.
He even gave him
some gold coins
for him and his father.
Pinocchio met a fox and a cat
on his way home.
Pinocchio showed off his gold coins,
and the fox and the cat said,
“Plant your gold coins in the garden.
The gold coin trees will grow and grow.”
“You can be rich!
There’s a magic field. I’ll let you know.
Plant your gold coins!”
Pinocchio planted the gold coins
in the magic field
as the fox and the cat said.
“I will be rich and live happily with my dad!”
“You will be rich and live happily with your dad!”
The next day,
Pinocchio ran to the magic field
as soon as the sun rose.
“Oh, no! Where are my gold coins?
Why don’t I see any gold coin trees around
or the coins I buried under the ground?”
Just then, a fairy appeared.
“Pinocchio, oh, mischievous Pinocchio!
Your dad is looking for you desperately.
Why are you crying here helplessly?”
“The fox and the cat
took my gold coins.”
Pinocchio’s nose grew longer!
“I lost my gold coins
while running back home.”
Again, Pinocchio’s nose grew
longer and longer!
“Longer, longer nose!
Your nose will grow as you lie.
Longer and longer! It will reach the sky.
Be a good boy, Pinocchio.”
Pinocchio decided to be a good boy.
“I won’t lie ever again.
I promise I’ll be good.
I’ll try my best, and I should.
I promise you.”
The fairy called the woodpeckers.
The woodpeckers pecked
Pinocchio’s nose.
Pinnochio returned home,
but Geppetto wasn’t there.
He left to find Pinocchio.
Pinocchio studied hard
and waited for Geppetto.
Then one day,
some friends called Pinocchio.
“Pinocchio, let’s go to the Land of Toys!”
“No one will give you a lecture.
You can play every day.
You don’t have to study anymore!”
“Wow, it sounds so fun!
I’ll be there for a while.
Just, just for a little while!”
Pinocchio had so much fun
playing in the Land of Toys.
He lost track of time.
While Pinocchio was playing,
his body started to change
little by little.
“My ears are pointy!
My fingers are stubby!
Neigh! It’s not me.
Look at these stumpy hooves and a long tail.
I’m a donkey. Oh, no way!
Neigh!”
Pinocchio’s friends
also became donkeys.
“You had a lot of fun. Now work!”
The coachman sold the children
who turned into donkeys
to a faraway country.
Pinnochio was carried
across a sea by boat.
There was a sudden storm,
and the boat capsized.
Pinocchio fell into the sea.
He became a wooden puppet again.
Just at that time,
Here’s an enormous shadow
quietly approaching Pinocchio!
It opens its huge mouth. Ah!
It swallows the wooden puppet. Gulp!
“Dad, help me!”
Pinnochio found a light
while wandering around
the dark tummy.
It was Geppetto with a lamp!
“Oh, Dad, why are you here?”
“Oh, Pinocchio,
what are you doing here?”
Geppetto fell into the water
and was swallowed by a shark
while looking for Pinocchio.
“Dad, let’s get out of here.
Please hold me tight.
We can make it. We can live!”
As soon as the shark
opened its mouth,
Pinocchio ran outside.
Pinnochio and Geppetto
safely came home.
Pinocchio studied hard.
He became a good boy.
Then one day, the fairy appeared.
“Pinocchio!
Sweet and wonderful boy, Pinocchio!
Now you shall be a real boy!”
“Dad, Dad,
look at me!
I became a real boy!”
“Oh, my dear son, Pinocchio!
You finally became a real boy!”
Pinocchio and Geppetto
lived happily ever after.
