Once upon a time,
there was a boy named Jack.
He lived with his mother.
They were very poor.
One day,
Jack’s mother sighed and said,
“We have no choice, but to sell the cow.
Jack, please go to the market.”
“Yes, mother. Don’t you worry.”
Jack left the house with the cow.
Jack grabbed the reins of the cow
and trudged to the market.
Then he met an old man
wearing a shabby cape
along the way.
“Hey there,
would you like to exchange your cow
for this bean?”
“Are you serious?
My cow for this silly bean?”
“This is a magic bean!
It’s nothing like the beans you’ve seen.
There’ll be special things
that have never been.
Come on. It’s your golden opportunity!”
Magic bean?
“I love it!”
“Mother! Mother!
Look at this bean!
It’s a magic bean.
I exchanged it for the cow!”
Jack’s mother was very angry.
“What?
You exchanged the cow
for this bean?”
Jack’s mother got furious. Swish!
There goes the magic bean. Swoosh!
“My magic bean!”
The next morning,
the sun rose,
but the house was dark.
Jack tilted his head
and looked out the window.
And there
was a giant beanstalk
covering the window.
“The magic beanstalk grew overnight so high!
Taller and taller that it reached the sky.
What’s on top of the beanstalk? Up there?
I’ll climb up there.
Curiosity’s something that I can’t bear!”
As Jack climbed to the top,
he was very surprised.
There was a grand castle.
Jack sneaked through the open gate.
“A huge table, a huge chair!
A pot and a frying pan are also huge.
A giant must be living here!”
At that moment, thump, thump!
the ground started shaking,
and a huge giant came in with a hen.
Jack quickly hid himself
in the fireplace.
“Sniff, sniff! What is this smell?
Tender and soft!
And delicate!
This smells like a human child!”
The giant looked around the house
and sat on a chair.
“There’s no way
I have a human child in my house.
Dear Hen, dear Hen,
lay a golden egg!”
The hen laid a golden egg. Boing!
What just happened?
Bam!
The giant fell asleep while eating.
Jack got out of the fireplace
and crept quietly out of the castle
with the hen.
Then he quickly climbed down
the beanstalk and came back home.
The hen laid a golden egg every day,
and Jack and his mother
became rich.
“The beanstalk is still right here.
Would the giant’s castle
once again appear?
I’m curious. I want to know.
I wish to climb up there so.”
“Maybe for one last time!”
Jack climbed up the beanstalk again.
The castle was still there.
Jack hid in a large pot this time.
Soon, thump, thump!
The ground shook,
and the giant came in
with a golden harp.
“Sniff, sniff! What is this smell?
Tender and soft!
And delicate!
It smells like a human child!”
The giant searched the house
but couldn’t find Jack.
“If a human child comes,
I won’t miss him this time!
Dear Harp, dear Harp,
sing me a song!”
“My golden strings sound like
an angelic voice.
I play a song only for you.
When you listen to my song,
you’ll rejoice.
I play happy music for you,
only for you.”
The giant dozed off
while listening to the song.
Jack came out of the pot
and picked up the harp.
Then the harp started screaming.
“Master! Oh my Master!
Someone is taking me!”
“Sniff, sniff! It’s the human child!
I’m not missing him again.
He stole my hen!”
Jack quickly escaped the castle
and ran as fast as he could.
Jack climbed down the beanstalk
and came down in a hurry.
The giant also ran after Jack.
The beanstalk started swaying
because of the giant.
“Come here,
you sneaky human child!
I’m going to gobble you up!”
“Mother! Mother!
Please give me an ax!
Quickly, please!
Come on! Hurry up!”
Jack jumped off the beanstalk,
received the ax,
and swung it as hard as he could.
Thump! Swing the ax once.
The beanstalk is shaking.
Thump, thump! Swing the ax twice.
The beanstalk is shaking, shaking!
Bump, thump!
Finally, the beanstalk snapped.
The giant fell to the ground and died.
Jack and his mother
have lived happily ever after.
“My dear hen lays golden eggs every day.
Listen to the most beautiful songs
that my harp plays!”
“But there’s still something weird.
The beanstalk is gone,
and my yard’s all cleared.
But I keep looking at the sky.
I don’t know why. I don’t know why.”
Well, no one knows why!
